Samsung may already be working on a second-gen Galaxy Fold with S-Pen

Samsung’s second Fold may be ready by 2020 and is said to feature an 8-inch display. Will it be enough to redeem Samsung after the Galaxy Fold mishap?

The first Galaxy Fold hasn’t even hit the market yet and Samsung is already allegedly working on the second generation foldable smartphone, according to The Korea Herald. The first-gen Fold will launch at the end of July.

The first Galaxy Fold had a release date set for April 2019, but Samsung placed the release on hold after several test models broke. At the time, Samsung said in a press release:

“Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.”

Following the bad reviews, several companies, including AT&T and other major partners, cancelled their pre-orders of the Galaxy Fold. This led Huawei to slow down production of the Mate X as well, out of caution.

Samsung vs Huawei

It’s possible that Samsung wants to beat Huawei to the release of the first foldable phone. However, the Mate X is expected to hit the market in September 2019. That doesn’t leave Samsung with much leeway.

However, experts predict that the prolonged trade war between Beijing and Washington could buy Samsung some time.

Huawei is struggling to hire suppliers after the US government placed it on the Entity List.

Samsung will reportedly start with the second phase of their foldable phone plan – dubbed the company’s “secret weapon” – during July.

The newer version will fold outwards, similar to Huawei’s Mate X.

While Samsung is keeping development of future foldable phones under wraps for now, rumour has it that suppliers have already begun production of its parts.

As reported by ZDNet, the second-generation foldable phone unveiling may take place in December, with a commercial launch planned for sometime during 2020.

Folding the future

During the Samsung Investors Forum in June, Senior Vice President at the Mobile Communications Division Lee Jong-min, hinted at a varied lineup of foldable phones. He added:

“Foldable smartphones provide a whole different user experience. I don’t think I could go back to the old smartphone platform.”

There’s a lot at stake. Foldable phones and 5G-enabled phones are currently hot topics, and the manufacturer to get a market-ready phone out first will be able to claim a world title.

The mobile industry needs a boost and it needs it now. According to a report by Counterpoint Technology Market Research on June 23, global sales of premium smartphones declined 8% during the first quarter.
