The England and Wales Cricket Board has partnered with Prenetics to get international cricket back to work. The international genetic testing and digital health company announced the partnership this week.

This is the first integrated testing and COVID-19 digital Health Passport for sports to be rolled out in international cricket. Prenetics has already unrolled the passport  in Premier League football.

The programme will support the first Test match against the West Indies at the Ageas Bowl. The international game will be played behind closed doors and start on Wednesday 8 July.

Testing due to start

Prenetics was due to begin testing both sets of teams, squads, and support staff from this week.

The testing will take place under the Prenetics’ Screen by Circle programme at the bio-secure venues selected for international matches, which are Ageas Bowl and Emirates Old Trafford.

The same safety protocols and process will apply with these operating as drive or walk-through testing centres for the rtPCR Covid-19 Antigen testing. This is the same procedure used by PHE.

The digital Health Passport programme is a web-based platform to identify an individual’s testing status and history based on RT-PCR COVID-19 test results.

It works by scanning a QR code to determine if results are valid and current for entry or access via agreed points of control at stadiums, and for any venues in which safety is a concern.

Cricket passport ready to run

The company said it expected the digital Health Passport for the English Cricket Board to be deployed from next week.

“This adoption by the ECB of our Project Screen by Circle programme and our clinical Health Passport demonstrate how sports and other organisations can link digital results to access controls or accreditation systems,” said Prenetics CEO for Europe, Middle East and Africa Avi Lasarow.

It was significant as it came “at a time when the UK opens the doors to return to normal work and life for millions of people”.

“This part of the commitment of proprietary initiatives to playing a leading role in ‘getting Britain back to work and living’,” said Lasarow.

“We strive to reduce and prevent lifestyle-related health conditions, so that everyone can live longer, healthier, and happier lives.”

How to use the passport

The steps for digital Health Passport enrolment are:

  1. Each participant enrolls via email and must upload a profile photo which is verified by the sponsoring club, before they can unlock their unique personal code;
  2. Prenetics – via SSL encryption – stores this data on the cloud; and
  3. Each participant will have a unique digital Health Passport which they can access on their mobile phone.
