With a fourth consecutive petrol price increase forecast for May, there’s more misery in store for Mzansi’s motorists next month. Petrol is set to rise by another 56 cents, and although the diesel price will remain as it is, a majority of road users are being grabbed by the gas pumps.

Earlier in the month, it was predicted that a 55 cent rise was on the cards. That’s actually been revised by the Central Energy Fund and the AA, who are now saying that the increase will be by 56 cents. Lovely…

The rise takes South African petrol prices back towards a record-breaking figure. The highest per-litre price of fuel was set at R17.09 last year. We’re now just 41 cents away from breaking that record in June.

Expected petrol price for May 2019 in South Africa:

(All prices based on rand-per-litre)

Coastal regions

  • Petrol: R16.05.
  • Diesel: R14.32.

Inland regions

  • Petrol: R16.69
  • Diesel: R14.87.

Why has the petrol price for May 2019 increased?

April has proven to be a particularly frustrating month for the rand. The currency started the month off at R14.19 to the US dollar and, despite maintaining and even strengthening towards the middle of the month, currently sits uncomfortably at R14.39.

The price of crude oil has also spiked, with both factors conspiring to make life on the road a little more difficult for South Africans.
