What could have ended in tragedy for the young couple from the Monotomosetlha informal settlement, turned into a blessing, all thanks to four Constables and a Data Typist from the Vorstershoop police unit.

According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, Vorstershoop police received a distress call about a 22-year-old woman who was in labour, at 06:00.

Due to the informal settlement’s location, emergency medical services are hard to come by. So, taking the matter into their own hands, the team of five Vorstershoop police staffers headed out to Monotomosetlha, to assist the woman.

“Upon realising that the woman was about to give birth, they called an ambulance. While waiting for the ambulance from Morokweng, two female Constables assisted the woman to deliver a bouncing baby girl,” Brig Mokgwabone revealed.

Emergency medical services only arrived at the scene three hours later. If the Vorstershoop police had not reacted as quickly as they did, it is likely that the baby would have died.

The remoteness of the Monotomosetlha makes it extremely difficult for residents to access public services. The distance from Vorstershoop to Mafikeng, the capital city of North West, is around 380km.

Based on Google Map readings, at an average speed of 100km/h, it would have taken the emergency medical services at least four hours and nine minutes, to get to the Monotomosetlha informal settlement.

However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the police in the community, the baby girl entered the world in the safe hands of the public protectors.

North West top cop, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the quick thinking of the Vorstershoop officers. He expressed his gratitude “for their courageous efforts and going beyond the call of duty by assisting the woman to deliver the baby.”
