The death of Serge Mokonyane, the husband of Minister of Environmental Affairs Nomvula Mokonyane, was confirmed by the family on Thursday.
What happened to Serge Mokonyane?
As reported by the Citizen, Serge lost his life in hospital, after a lengthy battle with illness.
“The minister and family are officially in mourning and humbly request privacy at this moment of grief.
“The family will in due course communicate details pertaining to the funeral and any other memorial events and services.” the family’s statement read.
Difficult period for Nomvula Mokonyane
The news of Mokonyane’s husband’s passing has come at the worst time for the minister.
Her name has been implicated, yet again, in the corruption that’s taken centre-stage at the state capture inquiry.
However, at this time of mourning, Mokonyane has been receiving nothing but support from people on social media.
ANC and Ramaphosa extend condolences
The ANC described Serge as an activist, a businessman, and Mokonyane’s pillar of strength.
“Ntate Mokonyane was a pillar of strength to his family and provided much-needed support to his children including Cde Nomvula who spends most of her time working for the people of our country,” ANC spokesperson, Dakota Legoete, said in a statement.
Serge leaves behind his wife and two children, Africa Mkhize and Retlabusa Mokonyane.
“We can imagine the pain the Mokonyane family is going through after losing a father and a supportive husband. This is a sad loss to the entire mass democratic movement.
“Ntate Mokonyane was a brother, father and comrade to many people. The ANC urges the South Africans to pray for the Mokonyane family during this difficult time,” the ANC added
The Presidency, on behalf of Cyril Ramaphosa, also extended its condolences to the Mokonyane family.
“President Ramaphosa’s thoughts and prayers are with Minister Mokonyane, her immediate and extended family, and friends and associates of Mr Mokonyane.”.
