As much as travellers love having to kill a few hours in OR Tambo every time they fly from Cape Town to Australia – and the reverse leg – one can’t help but feel a direct flight between the two locations needs to be added to the schedule soon: That’s something that Paul van den Brink of Cape Town Air Access (CTAA) agrees with, too.

New direct flights coming to the Mother City

Van den Brink is the company’s project manager. Speaking to Reuters on Friday, he confirmed that that the group – in conjunction with Cape Town International Airport – are looking to capitalise on the boost to the tourism market caused by CPT’s new direct flights to New York.

According to officials, ticket sales are “in line” with their forecasts, more than six weeks after announcing that the Mother City would send direct flights to Newark International Airport from December 2019 – March 2020.

The Newark International Airport in New Jersey is the 6th busiest airport in the States and will provide South Africans travelling from Mzansi with quick access to New York, and it’s commercial and cultural centres.

Brazil, Australia could soon be “on the radar”

With these bold steps forward being handsomely rewarded from customers Stateside, CTAA want to push the envelope even further. Van der Brink revealed that there are plans to connect Cape Town to Sao Paulo in Brazil, marking the city’s first direct flight to South America. But Capetonians are waiting for another big fish in the southern hemisphere…

The CTAA boss stopped short of revealing the exact destination, but he did claim that “an unnamed city in Australia” would be their next target. A direct flight from Cape Town to Australia is seemingly the missing piece of the puzzle for aviation in South Africa, and it would go a long way to managing an air-travel nightmare.

Cape Town to Australia direct flight – what’s the quickest current route?

The quickest possible route from Cape Town to Australia would be to land in Perth, Australia after a transfer in Johannesburg. That would take just over 13 hours. However, a direct flight could reduce the travel time to something within the 10-11 hour bracket. Currently, flights to Australia can be found from R15 000 upwards.
