A sobbing Obed Leshoro, the 19-year-old suspect charged with the brutal murder of Naledi Lethoba, appeared before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Friday, to submit his bid in the bail hearing.

As reported by Times Live, the suspect has rather opted to abandon his right to bail and will, instead, be remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

What happened to Naledi Lethoba?

The body of Lethoba, a 21-year-old student from Goldfields TVET College, in Welkom, Free State, was discovered in an open-field in Dagbreek on Wednesday, 19 May.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng, her body was found with a knife stuck in her neck and much of her torso and face burned.

Investigators also made a gruesome discovery when they took a closer look at her charred chest — both of her breasts were cut off.

Lethoba’s body was collected by the forensic unit and stored as a Jane Doe until her family came forward a few days later and identified it as the 21-year-old missing girl from Bothaville, Free State.

What we know about Leshoro

Leshoro was considered by his peers as a quiet and seemingly harmless person.

It is believed that before college, he went to Welkom Gimnasium High School.

While the suspect did not attend the same school as the victim, it is believed that Lethoba and the suspect were acquainted in some capacity.

Based on Leshoro’s Facebook profile, he was a student from the ICALC Training Academy in Welkom, just two kilometres away from where Lethoba studied.

When is Leshoro’s next court date?

Soon after Lethoba’s body was discovered, Leshoro’s parents handed the 19-year-old over to authorities, identifying their son as the one responsible for the brutal crime.

With Leshoro opting to remain in police custody, the court has moved next appearance to Friday, 12 July.
