A horrendous N3 crash has claimed the lives of nine people on Monday afternoon, as eight vehicles slammed into each other on the busy stretch of highway. As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the accident – which occured at Barry Marais near Vosloorus – is going to have a serious effect on commuters by Monday afternoon.
N3 crash – latest news and death toll
Of course, a traffic jam is perhaps inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. But the N3 connects the southern suburbs of Gauteng and beyond to Johannesburg. Any hold-ups here can cause extreme volumes of traffic, and authorities are already advising motorists to avoid the area completely and find alternative routes.

Local police have suggested that commuters instead use the N17 toll route, and the off-ramp at Rondebult Road, turn into M43 Barry Marais or continue on R103.
We understand that the devastation is located at the Leondale Road exit, near Spruitview. A number of vehicles involved have been flipped over onto the grass embankments by the side of the road, catching ablaze in the process. Unfortunately, emergency services are now being hampered by veld fires.
