At least 30 other countries have outlawed travel from South Africa, in one form or another. On Tuesday, Spain added its name to the growing ‘ban list’.

Ay caramba… The Government of Spain has confirmed that they will institute a ‘temporary ban’ against people intending to travel from South Africa or Brazil from Wednesday onwards. Both countries have been home to troubling new variants of COVID-19, compelling the European nation to act. The decision now further ostracises SA from the rest of the world.

Only legal residents or nationals of Spain, and the neighbouring microstate of Andorra, will be allowed in from Brazil and South Africa, government spokeswoman Maria Jesus Montero told a news conference.

Passengers stopping in Spain while on their way to another country will be allowed to enter – as long as they will remain for less than 24 hours and do not leave the airport, she added. The new rules will take effect on Wednesday and will remain in force for two weeks, although it could be extended depending on how the pandemic evolves, the minister said.

Madrid has, since the end of December, also banned arrivals by sea and air from Britain, except for residents or nationals of Spain and Andorra because of the discovery of a new more contagious virus strain there last year.

Dozens of countries close borders to SA travellers

The list* identifies nations that have either banned travellers from South Africa specifically, closed their borders temporarily, or imposed blanket national travel bans against all other territories. At least 30 countries currently have restrictions that mean people coming from SA will not be allowed to enter: As of Tuesday 2 February, that list includes:

  • Australia
  • Algeria
  • All land borders with Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, eSwatini, and Mozambique

  • Germany
  • Hong Kong

Travel ban MAPPED

On the map, you’ll see a lot of grey spaces, where you may expect a ‘travel ban’ to be in place. Most countries will host travellers from South Africa now – but they either have to abide by quarantine rules, or produce a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival. Limited flight schedules remain with China and several other nations – hence why they aren’t featured here.
