Recently, there was an elevator accident that involved two people. One passenger was able to escape while the other died on the scene.

A woman from Johannesburg has died in a freak elevator accident.

She was in an elevator with a young man when a cable snapped and the lift sped up 10 floors.

ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell confirmed that the lift had travelled from the 16th to the 26th floor.

One dead and one in the hospital

Campbell explained that the lift had managed to move just beyond the 26th floor and that this allowed one of the passengers to escape.

“A second person was able to crawl free through the remaining gap between the top of the interior door and bottom of the lift door – he was transported to hospital by another service.”

Difficulty treating the injured woman

The woman had suffered a severe head injury during the elevator accident when the lift came to a sudden halt. The lift was very unstable when paramedics arrived on the scene.

“Apparently, one of the paramedics was able to get into the lift to insert an IV line to try and stable the patient. The fire department told the paramedics that the lift was too unstable and that they had to get out. They were trying to treat her from the sidelines and they were trying to stabilize the lift. But apparently, it took too long to get it under control.”

The woman believed to be in her 40s. Despite the efforts made to treat her during the incident, she succumbed to her injuries.

The male passenger was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

Mystery surrounds the elevator incident

It is still unclear what led to the elevator accident.

“At this point, unfortunately, our paramedics don’t really get involved with the locations so we don’t have any clarification on that at this point.”
