The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) is requesting the assistance of the public in the identification of a group of armed robbers who allegedly robbed an SBV cash-in-transit truck of an undisclosed amount of money on 29 August 2019 in Kriel, Mpumalanga.

It is alleged SBV security guards were loading cash into an auto teller machine when they were suddenly confronted by an unknown number of heavily armed suspects wearing uniforms similar to theirs.

CASH-IN-TRANSIT CREW THREATENED WITH EXPLOSIVES

According to a statement, the cash-in-transit crew was forced to open the armoured vehicle vault while being threatened with explosives.

In the process, one crew member was shot twice. He, however, survived the attack.

“The suspects fled the scene using a Silver Toyota van and a Toyota Etios, taking along the truck keys,” said police Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi.

Anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of the armed cash-in-transit robbers is urged to contact the investigating officer Captain Thembi-Nkosi Nkambule on 082-303-9872.

Alternatively, one can contact the SAPS Crime Stop number at 086-001-0111 or provide information via the SAPS MYSAPSAPP. All information will be treated with strictest confidence and callers may remain anonymous.

TWO HAWKS MEMBERS KILLED IN CIT SHOOTOUT

In a separate incident, two Hawks officers and three suspected cash-in-transit robbers were killed in a shootout in R503 near Mafikeng in the North West on 5 March.

The group of armed men shot at a CIT van and forced it off the road. Security on the van fought back against the robbers, who fled before engaging with members from Hawk’s Technical Operations Management Section (TOMS).

The men shot and killed Detective Warrant Officer Delene Grobelaar, 44, with three of their own succumbing to gunshot wounds. A further four men belonging to the cash-in-transit gang were arrested, with several more on the run.

The gang was later traced to the town of Coligny, where the wanted suspects were confronted at a petrol station. The suspects retaliated with AK 47 rifles fatally wounding Detective Sergeant Wynand Herbst, 42. The National Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, expressed his sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the “beloved” members.

“We shall hunt the members of that organised criminal group that attacked the Cash in Transit vehicle and caused the death of our members,” said Lebeya.
