The Gauteng Department of Education has officially launched the 2020 online applications process after what seemed like a long and strenuous period.

As reported by eNCA, Gauteng education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, revealed that, after much deliberation with the concerned stakeholders, the 2020 online applications system is finally live.

What caused delay to 2020 online applications?

The entire launch is a week late. The department was forced to put its brakes on the process to entertain the concerns of lobby groups such as AfriForum and Suid Afrikaanse Onderwysers Unie (SAOU, and other school governing bodies.

The main area of contention in the application process was its failure to make provisions for language.

In its previous version, the system had not considered the ramifications of placing children in schools that offer Afrikaans as a language of learning and teaching (LOLT).

This, the lobby groups argued, would not bode well for learners who come from different teaching backgrounds. Lesufi, after deliberating the issue with the aforementioned parties, resolved to update the system with an option to suggest schools based on race and language.

“We don’t use race to place people, we use race just to know how many people have applied that are black, African, so they said remove that part it must be information that is used. We have accepted that as well, reluctantly,” he exclaimed.

With the political aspect of the matter put to bed, the system has finally been launched and service centres have been opened across the province, ready to assist parents with learners going into Grade One and Eight in 2020.

Parents have until 22 July to process their application and place their children in the prescribed schools.

Those who wish to use the online application system have been urged by Lesufi to watch the tutorial video before proceeding with the application.

“There is a tutorial video that is available on our website, that video takes parents step by step because this is a three-step process. It’s very important that people familiarise themselves with it because when we open there’s no room for mistakes,” he added.
