A Durban man has shot and killed during an argument over the recovery of his wife’s vehicle following an accident on Crocodile Road in Verulam.

A Durban man was shot dead in an argument over a parking accident in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The South African Police Services have arrested a suspect who told Emergency Services at the scene of the incident that he acted in self-defence.

Parking mishap leads to Murder in Verulam

The argument was sparked by a parking accident that saw the deceased’s wife miscalculate a turn into a driveway on Crocodile Road in Verulam in Durban. The woman’s Hyundai i20 allegedly fell onto a vehicle belonging to the suspect. The accused is reported to have blockaded his driveway with two other vehicles to prevent the vehicle from being retrieved. The man claims he intended to hold the vehicle until his damages claim was paid out.

A spokesperson for KZN security company Reaction Unit South Africa said that despite the suspects claim that the deceased attempted to stab him, no knife was recovered from the scene.

“A man was shot dead during an argument following an accident in Crocodile Road in Waterloo in Verulam, Durban, in the early hours of Saturday morning,” security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said in a statement issued to the press.

“”At approximately 01:52 members of Reaction Unit South Africa arrived at the scene of a shooting. The Verulam SAPS were in attendance and had placed an individual under arrest for murder. His licenced 9mm pistol was also seized.

“It is alleged that the deceased’s wife was in the process of turning her Hyundai i20 when she misjudged the width of the driveway and landed on top of a car on a neighbouring property.

Durban parking mishap turns deadly

“The neighbour used two of his vehicles to block the Hyundai i20 and prevent anyone from salvaging the vehicle until his damages claim was settled,” the release contines.

“The woman’s husband arrived on the scene in a Mahindra Bolero and asked that the obstructing vehicles be removed in order for him to tow his wife’s vehicle.

“An argument broke out when the suspect drew his firearm and shot the deceased in the chest. The suspect claimed that the deceased attempted to stab him with a knife. However, the knife was not recovered at the scene,” RUSA said.

The man is believed to have been take to Verulam Police Station to be charged but the SAPS have yet to issue a statement confirming the incident or the charges.
