The latest COVID-19 figures have been released. According to the Health Ministry, 12 710 new cases were identified in South Africa. As of today, the death toll stands at 38 854, with recoveries at 1 160 412.

Breakdown of new confirmed COVID-19 cases

As per Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s report, 12 710 confirmed cases were identified during the past 24 hours. Unfortunately, we also lost 566 patients to COVID-19-related illnesses.

As per the report, 104 patients from the Eastern Cape passed away, 46 from the Free State, 80 from Gauteng, 218 from KwaZulu-Natal, 6 from Mpumalanga, 8 from Northern Cape and 104 from the Western Cape.

At the time of publishing, the Health Ministry conducted 7 762 073 cumulative COVID-19 tests, of which 62 054 were done during the past 24 hours: 29 176 at public facilities and 32 878 at private facilities.

Global statistics

At the time of publishing, the global caseload currently stands at 97 167 174 as of Wednesday 20 January 2021, along with 2 079 003 recorded deaths and 69 668 700 recoveries.

The USA has a caseload of 24,936,311 confirmed cases, along with 414,340 total deaths and 14,903,131 recoveries. Approximately 126,290 new cases were recorded over the last 24 hours.

Also in the top five is worst-affected countries is India with a caseload of 10,610,632 while Brazil has a caseload of 8,638,249, Russia with 3,633,952 and the UK with 3,505,754.

France, which used to occupy the fifth spot, dropped down to sixth place. South Africa is currently 15th on the list, preceded by Poland, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Turkey.
