Cape Town weather warnings: Snowfall, high seas, gales and floods

Cape Town and surrounding areas will be in for bumpy ride over the next two days. SAWS issued multiple weather warnings and advisories for Monday and Tuesday, with snowfall also on the radar.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued several alerts and advisories on Monday 17 August for Cape Town and surrounds. High seas with wave heights between six and nine metres are expected.

Weather warnings, Monday 17 August

The SAWS have handed out several Cape Town weather warnings for the days ahead. SAWS are mainly concerned about the threat of swelling seas and gale-force damaging winds on the south-eastern coast.

The weather alerts are valid between 18:00 on Monday 17 August to 00:

Cape town weather watch: High seas

As per the advisories on the SAWS website, high sea conditions are expected along South Coast during the day and spreading eastward, reaching Port Edward at night. Alerts were issued for the following areas:

  • The Haven
  • Wavecrest,
  • Plettenberg Bay
  • Cape Recife
  • Ngqushwa
  • Cape Padrone
  • Cape St Francis
  • Kei River
  • Coffee Bay
  • Wild Coast Sun
  • Buffalo City
  • Port St Johns
  • Tsitsikamma
  • Mkambati
  • Port Alfred

In addition, high seas with waves of between six and nine metres are expected between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas from Monday morning, spreading to Plettenberg Bay and Cape Columbine from early Tuesday morning.

The conditions will subside west of Cape Agulhas from Tuesday afternoons. The following areas will be affected:

  • Saldanha Bay
  • Still Bay
  • Table Bay
  • George
  • Mossel Bay
  • Knysna
  • Dassen Island
  • Hermanus
  • Cape Point
  • Cape Agulhas

Will it snow in Cape Town

As per SAWS alerts, “disruptive snowfalls are expected over the high lying areas of the Karoo Hoogland Municipality overnight, from Monday evening into Tuesday morning.

Furthermore, snowfall is also expected over the high lying areas of the Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and the Garden Route Districts from Monday evening into Tuesday morning.

This should also affect residents in Oudtshoorn, Robertson, Laingsburg, Worcester, Ladismith, Beaufort West, Ceres, and Prince Albert

Cape town weather warnings: Damaging winds

The South African Weather Service also warns of gale force winds expected to reach speeds of 62 to 80 kilometres per hours. A W/NW wind is expected between Table Bay and Agulhas from Monday morning.

It will then spread to Plettenberg Bay by the evening and easing from Tuesday morning. In addition, strong winds of 50 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected over the Cape Metropole and Overberg areas.

  • George
  • Mossel Bay
  • Knysna
  • Cape Agulhas
  • Hermanus
  • Table Bay
  • Cape Point
  • Riversdale
  • Swellendam
  • Grabouw
  • Cape Town City

Cape town weather watch: Flooding

Lastly, flooding is expected over the Cape Metropole and Overberg areas on Monday evening. The warnings were issued to residents in the following areas:

  • Cape Agulhas
  • Grabouw
  • Hermanus
  • Cape Town City
