Now here’s a weather map that could become quite iconic in the coming days: Although there isn’t a biblical amount of rain heading for the south-west, it will likely play a part in completing a dramatic turnaround for the local dams. According to this latest Cape Town weather forecast, it’s going to rain for most of the long weekend ahead.

Three days of rain, both intermittent and substantial, is ready to douse the region from Friday onwards. It’s the perfect weekend to get the heaters on and binge a new series on the TV. However, the predicted amount of precipitation is likely to take the Cape Town dams – currently 98% full – right up to the 100% mark.

The landmark, which seemed impossible less than three years ago, will be the culmination of strict water restrictions and generous winter rainfall in the past few seasons. Despite the threat of COVID-19, the Mother City could head into the summer with reasons to be cheerful.

The first showers will make landfall in the early hours of Friday, but the downpours will only intensify around midday. The early afternoon is set to bring the most rainfall for the weekend, dousing the Cape in the process. Although the storms will ease going into the evening, you can expect intermittent bursts of rain right through until Saturday.

Cape Town weather weekend forecast: Predicted rain for Saturday 26 September and Sunday 27 September

You can expect a calmer, more serene affair on Saturday. Drops of patchy rain will be felt all across Cape Town, with the Overberg region enjoying the lion’s share of the wet weather. Showers will come and go throughout the day.

Sunday will also settle into a similar pattern, with another spell of rain gathering mid-afternoon. You can expect the deluges to fizzle out in the early evening. Regions near Paarl and Stellenbosch could be on course to record up to 50mm of rain over the course of three days, with 15-20mm possible over the Cape Town Municipality between now and Sunday:

Will the rain reach the dams?

For those of you keeping your eye out for the magic three-figures, we can tell the updated Cape Town weather forecast is favourable: The Berg River dam in Franschhoek, along with the two Steenbras facilities in Grabouw, are likely to get upwards of 20mm during the weekend. Theewaterskloof, the largest dam in the Western Cape, could receive between 8-10mm of the wet stuff over the next few days. Watch this space…
