President Cyril Ramaphosa is in Cape Town where he unveiled new trains that will give the public transport system a huge boost.

The president recently experienced first-hand one of the problems that have become somewhat of a norm when it comes to public transport after a perfectly-timed delay had him stuck in a Metrorail train for three hours in Pretoria last month.

On Tuesday, he headed to the Mother City to test new state of the art trains introduced to the region by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

Prasa chief executive Dr Nkosinathi Shishi earlier told Cape Talk Radio that the new model is being tested to see how if Cape Town’s current infrastructure is able to handle the types of trains that are being introduced.

“This is a trial operation which means the safety operator is going to be given an opportunity to look at how they respond to the current infrastructure, whether or not we have complied with the prescripts of the regulator.

“Our engineers will have an opportunity to ensure that the performance of these trains is at the best they could be.

The public will also have a chance to see them closer because they are available and belong to the Western Cape.
