In an unscrupulous political play, the ANC managed to take control of the Cederberg Municipality in the Western Cape, thanks to the help of a DA councillor.

As reported by EWN, the opposition party in the Western Cape tabled a motion of no confidence, vying for the removal of DA-aligned mayor, Joseph Farmer.

Why ANC tried to get rid of Joseph Farmer

The urgent motion of no confidence bore similarities to what took place at the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, where Athol Trollip was removed as the mayor, in what seemed like a strategic ploy by the ANC and other smaller parties.

The ANC’s move for the Citrusdal metro is one aspect of its goal to regain control of the province, after losing it to the DA ten years ago.

Farmer was a mere casualty in the game of thrones.

How did the DA councillor help the ANC?

It is believed that the DA councillor, identified by the Western Cape government’s Bonginkosi Madikizela as Bertie Sazz, purposefully voted for the motion to be passed, in line with the objectives of the ANC.

This surprising turn of events gave the opposition party the necessary number of votes to remove the mayor from power. While everyone was still trying to grasp what had just happened, the DA staged a walk-out.

This mattered very little to the ANC who went on electing its executive without the input of the ousted party.

“Today was a good day for the ANC. They took control of the Cederberg Municipality. We are getting ready for the next municipal elections.” The ANC’s Dennis Cruywagen gleefully noted.

Who is the mayor of Cederberg Municipality?

Sylvia Quinta has since been elected as the new mayor of the Citrusdal metro, with Mariaan Nell seated beside her as her deputy.

Madikizela has since expressed his sheer disgust for the actions of Sazz and wants her head on the chopping block.

“The key thing is that the party must be able to act against those people. I find it disheartening that people subject themselves to the party’s constitution and then go against it,” he said.
