The mystery around the ANC party list has taken on another form after secretary-general, Ace Magashule, stated that there would be no amendments to it.

As reported by EWN, the senior member of the ruling party was campaigning in Hermanus, Western Cape, on Wednesday.

ANC party list back on the spotlight

As election day looms, many have wondered what actions the ANC was going to take regarding the controversy surrounding its Parliamentary candidates’ list.

The formation of the list, according to the ANC, was a stringent task that involved all branches of the party, on a national scale.

What began as a process that included hundreds of candidates, was streamed down to a lean-looking list of candidates who, according to the democratic process that was taken to form it, would be the voice of the party in Parliament.

The ANC’s integrity commission (IC), after reviewing the list, concluded matters and submitted a report with recommendations to the party’s Top Six for further consultation.

The IC does not have binding powers within the structures of the party. Therefore, it can not rule on resolutions that were finalised in the party’s national conference.

Ace Magashule rubbishes rumoured amendments to list

Magashule is one of the Top Six members of the party. He is also a member of the party’s national executive committee (NEC).

In his address to voters in Hermanus, the secretary-general revealed that dark and sinister forces were behind the call for the ANC to amend its list.

He noted, however, that the list in its current form — with the inclusion of embattled cadres like himself, Malusi Gigaba, Nomvula Mokonyane and Gwede Mantashe to name a few — was a “done deal”.

“The matter has been finalised and it’s a product of the national executive committee. There are people who are trying to be naughty,” Magashule said.

IEC cannot remove candidates without convictions

He confirmed that the list had been submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

The electoral body had, earlier in April, stated that its powers only permitted it to remove candidates who have a criminal history.

None of the ANC members that have been accused of crimes related to fraud and corruption have been prosecuted by a court of law.
