After the flower industry lost so much work due to cancelled weddings and events in the past month due to coronavirus outbreak, Anli Wahl from Tulbagh took it upon herself to do something about the situation.

When Anli from Anli Wahl Floral Design saw how many flowers were being dumped at the big Holland Flower Markets on social media, she contacted some of her florist friends to help pull off a gigantic ‘flowerbomb’ in the Paarl, Western Cape.

By Wednesday, the project went viral on social media.

Going viral with their ‘flowerbomb’

“It absolutely broke my heart to see flowers that could’ve still have given joy to someone else, bulldozed away, destined for the rubbish dump!” Anli told The South African. “I knew my friend and flower farmer, Adene Nieuwoudt from Adene’s Farm Flowers in Wolseley was in the same predicament.”

She says that she’s always been inspired by Lewis Miller’s ‘flower flashes’ in New York City, a florist that surprises New York city after big functions with leftover flowers in random places like dumpsters or against lamp posts.

That’s when she decided to contact Adene with the idea to ‘flowerbomb’ essential service stores and the church in Tulbagh.

“So I rounded up my trusted florist friend Marcel from Design by Marcel and we collected a truck full of flowers from Adene! We dropped off a few buckets at the local old age home and with the rest we worked through the night to adorn our little town in flowers!”

Naturally, the reaction from everyone in town was so overwhelming and before they knew it the photos spread like wildfire on social media.

What’s more, Adene had another bunch of flowers that she couldn’t sell.

“We had to go even bigger, because there were ten times more flowers. We decided on Huis Vergenoegd, a prominent landmark and old age home in the heart of Paarl, Adene’s home town and the old age home were her grandfather used to live.”

They had to call in some help as there was a four-ton truck full of flowers to work with.

“So we contacted our other florist friends to come and help pull off this gigantic ‘flower bomb’! Huis Vergenoegd’s residents have been under lockdown from mid March, but they were allowed to come out onto the empty sidewalk and enjoy and admire the sea of flowers. We had cars hooting, stopping to take photos in the middle of the road, pedestrians, cyclists and joggers coming to a halt, totally mesmerised. I’ve never experienced so much joy in such uncertain circumstances.”

It is said that Jo-Lize van der Merwe from Floral Affairs in Riebeeck Kasteel and Amanda Theron from Kadou in Stellenbosch also helped with the making of the ‘flowerbomb’ while Nico Laubscher from N Concepts and Design in the Paarl helped with the structure.

The coronavirus’ impact on weddings

Due to the lockdown, a lot of weddings could obviously not take place which means that a lot of flowers went to waste. Flowers for the installation and ‘flowerbomb’ in the Paarl was supposed to be used at about 40 weddings and functions.

“It is peak wedding season in South Africa at the moment, so this pandemic could not have come at a more inconvenient time for all of us. All Adene’s beautiful dahlias are flushing at the moment, whic is absolutely devastating.”

Anli says that apart from being incredibly sad and disappointed, most clients were very reasonable about having to postpone or cancel their weddings.

“We are working closely with all of them to help and postpone their weddings and minimise the damage where possible. Some clients were foreign clients, who will most probably not be able to get married in South Africa again, as it will be too expensive.”

That’s why she says these ‘flowerbombs’ are also an ode to all the beautiful couples who had to cancel or postpone their weddings in this time and lose out on precious time with friends and family coming from all over the world.

“And our florist peers all over South Africa, who also had to close shop and [eventually] lost so much business due to this pandemic! May we always see the beauty around us, no matter the circumstances, be kind and giving, but above all, stand together ‘in the name of flowers’!”
