With the acquisition of the Star Wars franchise by Disney, we’ve been blessed with a fresh collection of movies that have to extend and enrich the Star Wars Universe.

As an added benefit of the acquisition, we’re now able to enjoy a Star Wars Themed experience like only Disney can deliver.

The Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge themed areas is already in place at Disneyland, opening on 31 May 2019 and the Hollywood Studios version is due to open on 29 August 2019.

The idea was first announced back in 2015 and construction started in 2016. Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge spans 14 acres and is set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker in the Star Wars timeline.

The area offers shops, restaurants and attractions and is set in the village of Black Spire Outpost on the frontier planet of Batuu.

The designers took the decision to choose a new location for the attraction. While we’ve all dreamt of a walk on Tatooine or the forest moon of Endor, the designers felt it was important that Galaxy’s Edge added to the growing Star Wars story.

“We wanted to build new Star Wars stories, new Star Wars destinations, but this time you could be in that story that required us to go to a new place,” said Scott Trowbridge who supervised the project.

Trowbridge describes Black Spire outpost as a place that used to be a vibrant trading port back in the old sub-lightspeed days. Now with advent of hyperspace, its prominence has kind of fallen and faded a little bit.

It is now a great spot for those who didn’t want to be on that kind of mainstream path. He adds:

“The smugglers, the bounty hunters, the rogue adventurers looking to crew up, the people who don’t want to be found — basically all the interesting people.”

The design of Black Spire outpost draws from the concept art from the original Star Wars Trilogy and features 41m tall spires standing amongst rock work meant to be petrified trees from an ancient forest.

In addition, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will thrust guests into the middle of the battle between the First Order and the Resistance.
