After more than half a century on the road and an unparalleled career that has redefined the cultural landscape and seen him claim his place as a true global icon, Elton John announced in 2018 that he would be hitting the road for one last time.
His final tour called “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” kicked off in the USA in September 2018 and although disrupted by the global pandemic, will reach its conclusion in 2023 after more than 300 shows across five continents. The new stage production will take his fans on a musical and highly visual journey spanning a 50-year career of hits like no one has ever seen before.
Sadly South Africa is not on the tour schedule this time, although Elton John has played here numerous times before, with his debut concert being at the Sun City Superbowl way back in 1983.
The arrival of a special coin in SA
All in not lost for local Elton John fans, as the South African Gold Coin Exchange and Scoin Shop, are excited to announce the arrival of a special coin paying tribute to the one and only Elton John. The Royal Mint celebrates Britain’s most significant musical performers with a contemporary series of commemorative coins called Music Legends. In January 2020, Queen (the band) was unveiled as the inaugural design in this collection, becoming the first band to be featured on an official UK coin, and now Elton John, the superstar who has been delighting fans for more than half a century.
Rael Demby, CEO of The South African Gold Coin Exchange and Scoin Shop said they are proud to be able to work together with the Royal Mint
“We have a special relationship with The Royal Mint and can source coins from their collections for our clients. We are proud to be the only South African coin dealer with this exclusive agency.”
An essential addition
Elton John’s style choices have always been eye-catching. From oversized sunglasses to glittering jumpsuits and crazy headgear. With any number of looks from which to draw inspiration, coin designer Bradley Morgan Johnson chose to show Elton John’s iconic musical note glasses and straw boater’s hat on the reverse. The obverse of the coin bears the image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2020 year-date, weight and purity, and the monetary denomination. This coin has very limited mintage (1100), making it highly sought after and essential addition to any numismatic collection.
This unique coin is said to be a great way for South African fans and music lovers to own a piece of the Elton John magic. The 1/4 oz 2020 Gold Proof Coin is currently being sold for R22 425, 00.
