Sharon Waugh, Cape Town: A guide to surviving lockdown for the travel-obsessed

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a bit of a jerk.

Due to the pandemic, all your travel plans for the foreseeable future have probably gone to hell (and unfortunately, I don’t mean the one in the Cayman Islands).

If, like me, you’re obsessed with travelling (and lucky enough to not have more serious concerns during this time), here’s a guide to surviving your own “itchy feet” while trapped inside the same four walls. Below are some tips on how you can turn your involuntary staycation into an exotic adventure, just by doing a lot of the things you would do if you were travelling now anyway.

Things you can do even though you’re in lockdown

You can still explore architectural marvels

Just because you can’t get lost in ancient palaces, temples or forts, doesn’t mean you can’t build your own. Who said couch cushion forts are just for kids? It can even double as a co-working space (with imaginary friends. Don’t invite real people to work in your co-working fort).

You can still go in search of wildlife

You never know what interesting creatures you may discover in your own backyard, that cupboard you haven’t cleaned in a while or just over your neighbour’s wall if you have a good view. I have to give a shoutout to my neighbour who likes to ribbon dance in her building’s parking lot. We see you. You go, girl!

You can still sample authentic local delicacies

Like the signature cultural dish of Coronaville: Banana bread

You can still enjoy a (not-so luxury) spa

Take yourself to the self-love spa where after enjoying a homemade face mask, you can look forward to a tennis ball back massage, courtesy of the closest wall.

You can still explore museums (virtually)

All the good ones are online for you to experience through your computer. Pro tip: If you make someone stand directly in front of the screen, so their head is blocking your view of the art, it will feel more authentic.

For adventure travellers, you can still get an adrenaline rush

You can do this by going for a walk without a mask.  From what I’ve heard, the amount that you may have to pay if you get fined, could easily make you pee in your pants.

You can still practise your cheesy travel Instagram poses for when you are able to travel again
