Try this easy guide on how to put together a self-care kit to satisfy all five of your senses.

Self-care Sundays continue to trend as society places more emphasis on recognising and prioritising mental health.

Taking care of yourself, with designated “me” time, helps to deal with the stress and anxiety of life.

And, particularly over a global pandemic that restricts us in so many ways, self-care Sundays are even more valuable.

What is a self-care kit?

A self-care kit is simply a box you fill with items which bring you comfort and warmth.

Ideally, you want your self-care kit to relieve stress and anxiety. The idea is that it will help get you into a calmer state of mind, and neutralise whatever is overwhelming you.

The best self-care kits are designed to accommodate all five of the senses: Touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste.

Here’s what you can look at adding for each sense.

Touch

A face-mask and moisturiser are key for skin care. Basic lip-care products like a lip balm are also good.

You can also add body butters, scrubs and other body-care products which nourish.

If the weather is cold try a heated wheat bag, which can be a good idea even if you do not have any body aches and pains. Think of it as a hot-water bottle for your skin, because the warmth of the wheat bag has a soothing effect on your muscles.

Comfortable clothing is also an essential element: look for cosy sweatpants and an oversized T shirt in a soft-touch fabric. Even pyjamas can do the comfort trick.

Sight

Your favourite book is a good idea. You may like to choose a novel by one of your favourite authors, or magazines or even poetry. Reading a volume of soft and soothing poetry is ideal for a self-care session.

A journal is another nice way to keep your thoughts together. Sometimes writing your feelings or thoughts down on paper can lift your spirits and free your mind of what is worrying you.

Hearing

Put on your favourite album or set up a playlist according to your moods. The idea is to draw up a separate playlist for different emotions. Then you will be able to find just the right songs for how you feel on your self-care Sunday.

You may also want to try to have some quiet time as well. Just turn the world off and enjoy the sound of silence.

Smell

Scented candles and essential oils in a long, hot bath can soothe your body and soul. You can also add bath bombs, bath salts or bubble bath.

Smell can evoke many moods, so choose something relaxing, and that you know you love.

If you don’t have a bath, use a fragrant shower gel and follow up with a scented moisturiser to lock in the uplifting aroma.

Taste

There are many herbal teas, such as green tea or any other of your favourite teas, which are good for stress relief. Hot camomile tea, for example, is extremely calming. Add a teaspoon of honey for a sweet element.

However, don’t forget to also add in one of two your favourite snacks: Chocoholics will find chocolates are essential!
