Since Black Pistol started in 2014, the four-piece band from Cape Town has been on the rise. The guys hope that their Sama (South African Music Awards) nomination will lead to even more success.

Comprising Jacques Michael le Roux, Daniel Louw, Roan Mustangand Stiaan Bruwer, the group took time to talk about the beauty of being unique, the importance of living life and the nomination moment.

How did you celebrate after receiving the news?

Jacques: Phonebook, call Roan Mustang … ring ring … ring ring … “hello this is Roan” … dude guess what … what?!?!? … WE ARE SAMA NOMINATED … WHOOOOOO YEAAAAAH!!!

Basically, that is how the news was taken on 15 July 2020 when all our hard work paid off. The first thing we did was organise a jam session!

When we say jam session, we mean celebration! Hugs were exchanged, high fives were flying around and some tears rolled down cheeks. It was a moment of utter bliss and shock!

To end off the night we picked up our gear and did what we do best… Rock n Roll!

“WHOOOOOO YEAAAAAH!!!”

Jacques

How was it like working with Sama-nominated producer Jo Ellis on this album?

Daniel: Working with Jo is amazing! His skills and vast knowledge helped us refine and add the small details to all the work we had put in.

He is a great guy and made us all feel so comfortable and relaxed through the recording process.

We can’t not mention the legendary assistant Christian Burgess as well, what an editing machine and great guy. We really look forward to recording our next album back at Blue Room Studios, hopefully in the near future!

Your instrumentals give off a Guns N’ Roses vibe and Stiaan’s vocals are reminiscent to Kiss vocalist Gene Simmons. Who has influenced you most?

Roan: Growing up I was listening to a lot of ’80s metal and rock. I still do, to this day. Since I started playing guitar about 20 years ago, a lot of my playing has been imprinted with that style and sounds from the ’80s.

Yes, guys like Guns N’ Roses, Black Sabbath, KISS, Metallica, AC/DC and many others have shaped my style, which you can hear in our music.

Recent influences are a blend of everything, even a country song would inspire me to pick my guitar up and put something together.

Your lyrics cover many hard topics. What is the process you go through when creating?

Stiaan: A line would pop into my head or I would hear someone say something profound and then that would become the main line of the track. I will work my way around the meaning of the sentence and add to it bit by bit.

Most of the time the lyrics come easily once I have identified the flow and the feeling of the music. Sometimes I will sit with a verse for months before I find something to add to it. I do not have a set formula for writing lyrics.

Most memorable reaction to your music?

Stiaan: The best reactions are always when people are turned with their backs to you. And we start playing and that wall of sound just hits them, and they are hooked. Love that look of surprise in the eyes!

Where do you find inspiration? What is your muse?

Roan: I love catchy, groovy sounding guitars and bass. I am constantly trying to find the next groove.

I have always been a fan of a song that hits you square in the face and grabs your attention from the first moment. That is how I apply my approach to new songs and then let the song develop from there.

I don’t specifically have a muse but I do pay close attention to the things around me, I get ideas from just watching movies. Also simple things like playing one of our songs a bit differently and accidentally stumbling onto something cool.

No matter where I am, as soon as I find a melody, even accidentally, I quickly take out my phone and record the idea before it is gone forever.

What advice do you have for young musos today?

Jacques: Practice, practice and wait, before I forget, practice. Whether alone in your room or with a band or even before music lessons … practice!

Learn your instrument like the palm of your hand. When it comes to band-like environments, find people you gel with, not just musically but as friends.

A band will end up being your second mini family.

Young people often feel different from the norm. What would you say to those who are struggling with the status quo?

Stiaan: Being normal sounds boring. Be who you are and let it make you happy.

If you are kind and loving, be as weird as you want to be. At the end of the day it is your differences that make you special.

Jacques: That is the thing, be different, explore your music, try things you never even imagined can musically be possible.

A motto to live by is to “live a life full of regrets rather than living a life full of what ifs. You will never know unless you try, you might just discover your niche.”

What message do you have for bands nominated in your category?

Daniel: We would like to congratulate everyone that was nominated! It is an amazing achievement for each band and an honour to share this with all of them.

We also want to wish all of them the best of luck for the rest of this journey we share together in the SAMAs!
