Behind the scenes
Riding With Sugar was written and directed by Cannes Lions Gold winner, Sunu Gonera. To add to the stellar cast and characters, the film was also produced by iconic film stalwart Helena Spring.
With a distinctive visual approach to his work, Sunu has made a name for himself as the visionary Afrocentric/Afrofutristic master behind the Absolut One Source Live video starring Kuli Chana and has recently returned from shooting episodes of the hit series Madam Secretary in L.A.
Gonera also told Screen Africa back in 2018 that creating Riding With Sugar “has been a dream since [he] first returned to South Africa from the States” in 2013.
Moreover, Riding With Sugar boasts a celebrated cast that includes Hakeem Kae-Kazim, known for Black Sails, Pirates of the Caribbean, X-Men, and Hotel Rwanda, alongside breakout stars Charles Mnene and Simona Brown.
As reported by One-Eyed Jack, filming for Riding With Sugar wrapped up in Cape Town back in December 2018. The Afrofuturistic feature film is seventeen years in the making and premieres on Netflix on 27 November 2020.
