If you haven’t had a chance to catch up on the 21 movies that make up the MCU, we’ve rounded up the six most vital films to watch before heading to the cinema this weekend.

However, if you plan on only watching Endgame a bit later, when the cinemas are quieter, we’ll include the complete list of 21 films below.

Iron Man

Other than Inifity War, the first Iron Man movie is the most obvious film to watch. Why, I hear you ask? Oh no reason, other than that it kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe more than a decade ago.

In fact, the entire Civil War storyline was foreshadowed in the very first scenes of Iron Man, by showing a newspaper article about the car crashed that claimed the lives of Tony’s parents.

Another newspaper headline boldly proclaims that “Tony Stark Wants to Save the World.” You’ll be forgiven for getting a tiny bit sentimental about all the times Stark really saved the world since then.

In Iron Man, Tony Stark builds his first suit trying to escape a group of terrorists called the Ten Rings. Since then, Tony has created more than 40 suits. Respect.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Chris Evans said during a recent press conference that Endgame would complete Captain America’s story arc. It’s only logical then that we honour Captain Rogers by watching the movie that started his storyline.

One scene that could hold a particular interest in the events in Endgame, is the moment Rogers first enters the US Armed Services Recruitment building. That specific scene was included in the Endgame trailer.

Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians arc takes on a journey with a different set of characters – Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket. Their connection to Thanos and Endgame? Gamora is Thanos’ adoptive daughter.

She has worked for Thanos as an assassin for years, but when she learned of the Infinity Stone at the centre of the orb, she betrayed him and vowed to keep it from getting into the Titan’s hands.

Captain America: Civil War

This one is important because Endgame will see Stark and Rogers unite for the first time since the events of Civil War. The duo had a falling out when Stark learned that Rogers knew details about his parents’ death.

But don’t take our word for it. Endgame director Anthony Russo said Civil War and Infinity War the “probably the two biggest lead-ins to [Endgame] in the sense that Civil War created the situation were the Avengers were divided.”

The Avengers

It was in Avengers that we were first introduced to the P.E.G.A.S.U.S project and the importance of the Tesseract. Thanos also made an appearance, remember? Oh, we were so naive back then, weren’t we?

The film introduced us to Hawkeye and members of S.H.I.E.L.D, but it also featured Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet for the first time, and it all went downhill from there.

Avengers: Infinity War

If you can’t get through the entire list before Endgame, this is the one movie you cannot skip. It’s the holy grail. From Infinity War, you’ll get a crash course on all the Infinity Stones, as well as the current players in the game.

Brush up on who is alive and who died at the end of Infinity War. It’s currently streaming on Netflix, and we suggest you leave it until last. Watch it right before you go see Endgame.

Bonus scenes

Avengers: Age of Ultron

You only need to watch one scene from Age of Ultron. When discussing the Chitauri aliens, Tony Stark says:

“We’re the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the live long day. But that up there, that’s the Endgame. How were you guys planning on beating that?”

Don’t stop there! The ensuing conversation is spine-chilling. Captain Rogers says they plan on fighting it together, only for Tony to say, “We’ll lose.” Chills.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

While the entire movie is fun and worthy of a rewatch, skip to the end credits if you’re short on time. The film takes place after the events of Civil War, but right before, and during, the events of Infinity War.

Ant-Man is stuck in the quantum realm when Thanos snaps his fingers because he had no one to bring him back when Hank and Hope evaporate into oblivion.

There you have it, folks, you are now all caught up. That should give you all the most essential pieces you need in order to enjoy and understand Endgame fully.

Skip forward to 1:20.
