The Golden Globe-nominated Escape at Dannemora showcases Patricia Arquette and Benicio del Toro in a stranger-than-fiction prison break story set in upstate New York in 2015.

The seven-part series tells the true story of the escape and state-wide manhunt for two convicted murderers. They escaped with the help of a prison worker who had an affair with both inmates, despite being married.

Patricia Arquette walked away with the 2019 Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of Tilly Mitchell, the prison worker who aids the inmates’ escape.

The dramatic physical transformation the actor underwent to play the role has been compared to Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Aileen Wuornos in Monster.

Del Toro plays the mastermind of the escape, reminding us why Newsday described him as “one of the greatest actors of his generation”. Paul Dano plays the second inmate and reluctant partner in the plan to escape the prison.

The Washington Post writes of Dano’s performance: “[He] excels at playing meek-mannered creeps” and “brings a steady and almost feral quality to the role, succumbing to Tilly’s twisted mix of mothering role play.”

The limited series is directed by none other than Ben Stiller, who’s proving himself to be a formidable force behind the camera. As USA Today put it:

“It may be hard for some viewers to reckon the star of Zoolander 2 with the excruciatingly raw and harrowing direction of Dannemora, but… Stiller shows himself more than able to direct drama, thrills, and action in a series that relies on all three.”
