Origins of Nurse Mildred
Mildred, or Nurse Ratchet, symbolises institutional corruption and those who have the power to abuse their vulnerable patients. Even in real life, abuse often goes unquestioned by other staff members.
According to Netflix, Ratchet was inspired by “the iconic and unforgettable character of Nurse Ratched” in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
“[Nurse Ratched is] a character from the classic 1962 novel named One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the movie that followed thirteen years later in 1975. The series is set to be an origin story of sorts; taking us back to before Nurse Ratched had evolved to the monster by exploiting people in the mental health care system.”
Ratchet will be released on Netflix on 18 September 2020, hence it currently doesn’t have an IMDb score. The series will reportedly take the same format as American Horror Story (AHS).
Ratchet has also been described as an AHS reunion: Murphy created the show that also starred Sarah Paulson in one of the lead roles. Continuing the AHS reunion, Finn Wittrock will appear in Ratchet as serial killer Edmund Tolleson
Nurse Ratchet, also known as the Severe Nurse, made an appearance in ABC’s Once Upon A Time as well. She debuted in season one, episode 12, and was portrayed by Ingrid Torrance.
