Philip Morris South Africa (PMSA) sat down with fashion designer Mzukisi Mbane on Thursday, to reveal the importance of inclusive design in South Africa, an intimate conversation and a closer look at the design of IQOS transpired.

Inclusive design meets technology

“We hosted this evening to show how, through inclusive design, we as a company are continuously looking to offer better alternatives to the benefit of public health, and to get smokers to abandon cigarette smoking. Around eleven million consumers worldwide, have already chosen to switch from cigarettes to IQOS and this is just the beginning.”

Mzukisi Mbane: “Technology in fashion has helped me improve production”

Mzukisi Mbane alongside PMSA engaged in an open dialogue with attendees at the soiree, to delve deeper into the design merged with technology as a frontier. Mbane who founded Imprint ZA five years ago stated that:

“Technology in fashion has helped me improve production and the sampling process. I imagine the print I would like to work with, design the print in the form of a graphic and have it printed on fabric. I would love to take advantage of what technology can do in a literal spin on “afro-futuristic” design aesthetic.”

The design is made pretty simple

Mbane describes himself and the Imprint ZA brand as ‘bold and colourful’. From the creation of iconic African prints and fabrics, he further exudes flair of creativity in the space of design. Inclusive design is one of Mbane’s key focus areas, and through his vision, the evening was aimed to showcase how both Mbane and PMSA have equally challenged traditions with design to ensure accessibility and personalisation for all South Africans – in their respective industries.

“Philip Morris International is disrupting the tobacco industry with the vision of creating a smoke-free future. Understanding inclusive design, through the use of advanced technology and science, allows PMI to create more intuitive, sophisticated and improved products. That help adult smokers, who would otherwise continue to smoke cigarettes to find better alternatives such as IQOS.”

Tobacco meets technology

From years of research and development a product was developed where the heating of tobacco instead of burning it produces the same satisfaction for smokers. IQOS heats the tobacco just enough to release flavorful nicotine-containing tobacco. For Phillip Morris, more than 11 million consumers have decided to switch to IQOS.
