The long-awaited series was released on Netflix in almost 200 countries, but for one fan who couldn’t stream it, ‘FOMO’ seemed to be too much to bear.

Over the past few days, two hashtags have consistently trended. Since the hugely anticipated Netflix series came out at the end of February, #PearlThusi and #QueenSono have featured prominently on social media.

Viewers who’ve been able to stream the series, have been giving their feedback, helping both the actress and series stay on the trends list.

Fan tweets plans to pirate series

The show was released on Netflix in almost 200 countries, but for one fan who couldn’t stream it, FOMO seemed to be too much to bear. 

The lead actress had tweeted her excitement that Queen Sono was the No 1 most streamed series in South Africa and in Kenya. A fan tweeted back with proof that he planned to pirate the series.

Thusi responded by requesting the man to not download it illegally.

“We worked so hard on it and the numbers via the platform itself will help the success of the show and other shows out of Africa on Netflix,” she pleaded.

‘Queen Sono’ most streamed in SA and Kenya

Unfortunately it’s difficult to track illegal downloads. However, according to viewership figures from Netflix, Queen Sono is doing extremely well across the continent.

Thusi recently tweeted that the series was leading in South Africa and Kenya, and asked fans for updates from their countries:

The responses showed just how well the series is doing in countries all around the world. Viewers from Trinidad and Tobago shared their rankings:

Celebs tweet positive feedback

Encouraging feedback for both the series and its star has come from globally renowned celebrities, such as musician Davido and presenter and actress Gabrielle Union. 

Union dedicated a post to Thusi, sharing how they’d first met and the friendship that has flourished over the years. Union praised Thusi for her charity work and for being a wonderful friend.

“There aren’t enough characters available for me to describe everything this woman has done for the world and accomplished! She’s the kind of woman to pop up at my birthday dinner at my favourite Mexican spot when I thought she was out the country. I’m so inspired by all the work she does.”
