Paris Hilton testified on Wednesday about the abuse she said she suffered at the Provo Canyon boarding school in Utah, in the Western United States, during her rebellious teenage years.

The heiress and reality star lobbied for a bill seeking to regulate the US’s so-called troubled teen industry. This follows the September 2020 release of her documentary, This Is Paris, where she speaks about the alleged abuse.

The Simple Life star testified at a state senate committee hearing at the Utah Capitol for the bill to require more government oversight to youth residential treatment centres. The bill will also require them to document when restraints are used.

The measure was passed based on the testimonies of Paris Hilton and other survivors.

The socialite was sent to boarding school for 11 months at the age of 17 because her parents were tired of her rebelling and misbehaving.

“It was so easy to sneak out and go to clubs and parties,” Hilton told People magazine.

“My parents were so strict that it made me want to rebel. They’d [punish me] by taking away my cellphone; taking away my credit card, but it didn’t work. I would still go out on my own.”

Paris Hilton was sent to a series of boarding schools that purportedly focussed on behaviour and mental development. The last of these schools was Provo Canyon boarding school, where she said she endured daily physical and mental abuse.

“It was supposed to be a school, but [classes] were not the focus at all. From the moment I woke up until I went to bed, it was all day screaming in my face, yelling at me, continuous torture,” she told People.

“The staff would say terrible things. They were constantly making me feel bad about myself and bully[ing] me. I think it was their goal to break us down. And they were physically abusive, hitting and strangling us. They wanted to instil fear in the kids so we’d be too scared to disobey them,” she said.

The Provo Canyon boarding school changed ownership in 2000. The new administration said they could not comment on anything that happened before the change.

Other claims against the school include solitary confinement and being force-fed pills. Four of Hilton’s former classmates also made similar allegations against the school and appear in the documentary.

Paris Hilton has since connected with other survivors from the troubled teen industry.

Released in September 2020, This Is Paris is a YouTube Originals documentary about the experiences that shaped the socialite. It has been viewed more than 19 million times.
