Music video creators are coming up with the goods during lockdown despite restrictions – and here are our top six picks of the current crop.

Music videos need storytelling with a vision in mind. But, over the 2020 pandemic, creatives have had to follow additional safety rules, which has probably brought in extra dimension of difficulty.

After all, there are few or no people on set and you can’t work face-to-face with most of your crew on animation and special effects. The list of restrictions goes on but some projects have pulled through.

MUSIC VIDEOS

Here are six projects that are likely to make you want to stick like glue to your screen. They are all worth catching!

1. SNOH AALEGRA – ‘DYING 4 YOUR LOVE’

The Whoa singer brings us a sultry video for her new song and it’s already brought in just over 1million views on YouTube. Most people know the Swedish singer and songwriter from her debut album Feels that dropped in 2017.

2. TOBI LOU – ‘LINGO STARR’

Nigerian-born Tobi Lou is known for his distinctive look and he first appeared in the music scene in 2015. He initially pursued a career in professional baseball and is now triple threat: rapper/singer, record producer and songwriter. Lingo Starr’s beat mixes as well as the striking visuals.

3. KOFFEE – ‘LOCKDOWN’

This song title could not be more fitting, right? Koffee, real name Mikayla Simpson, brings us a tune with good vibes and lyrics we all want to sing to. The Jamaican reggae singer, rapper and guitarist takes us through a colourful town in this video, which brought in 3 million views in just seven days.

4. JHENE AIKO – ‘SUMMER 2020’

The 32-year old American singer-songwriter graces us with her angelic vocals in a vibrant video. What’s more she does it in the cool setting: it’s all in the comfort of an inflatable pool. Summer 2020 was sampled to Summer Madness by Kool & The Gang and is on Aiko’s latest album Chilombo Deluxe.

5. BUDDY – ‘BLACK 2’

Buddy gets the message across in his new music video for ‘Black 2’.

Buddy unapologetically conveys his message in this sequel track Black 2 with his lyrics and visuals.

Considered underrated in the hip-hop community, the American rapper still brings in the numbers at 152 000 views in 24 hours. If you like Black 2, you’ll also enjoy the Bad Boys music video with Kent James!

6. DOJA CAT FT. GUCCI MANE – ‘LIKE THAT

If you ever wondered if Doja has moves, the colourful video has her doing the splits and moonwalking. Like That features Gucci Mane and has gone truly viral. This video brought in 36 million views in three weeks and this isn’t new for the Say So singer. She’s always captivated us with her bold looks.
