Looking at starting a blog? Lifestyle blogger Asha Singh shares six tips on how to build a successful blog.

Asha Singh, 23, is a social media influencer working in the field of lifestyle blogging. She also is an entrepreneur who started up the digital marketing firm Kaffeine Media.

She started her blog Life By Asha Singh in 2017 and has since worked with brands such as Lipton, Uber Eats, Vodacom, BB Bakeries, Clicks and more.

The KwaZulu-Natal-born Influencer shares her top tips on how to build a successful blog, as well as a few do’s and don’ts to guide you along the process.

How to start a lifestyle blog

First you need to figure out which website to blog on, so do your research. Write up a pros and cons list of each, or you can do a quick Google or Pinterest search and you will have all the answers you need.

“All the information is out there at the touch of a button and most of the time the information you need is freely available without the need for help from a professional,” said Singh.

Do you need a niche?

You do not necessarily need to have a niche in the beginning. Start by trying different things and you will learn what content you enjoy writing and creating. Eventually you would be able to identify your strong points and settle on your niche.

Don’t stress about perfect

From your first blog post to the design of your website nothing will be perfect, but you get better as you go along. You need to remember that you have to start from somewhere so don’t sweat the little things.

Level up your skills

As a blogger you are not just a blogger. You also need to be a photographer, copywriter, marketer, web programmer, graphic designer and whatever else the task at hand requires. Not everyone is initially skilled in all of the above, however, be prepared to learn.

For photography, watch YouTube videos. For marketing, do a digital marketing online course.

“Read up on different programming languages to fix tiny errors in your coding. You need to go into it with an open mind and be ready to learn,” said Singh.

How to use social media

A website or blog and social media work hand in hand. Nowadays no one cares about a one-hit wonder. Therefore it is important to establish your brand not just on your website but also on your social media channels.

And  keep your branding consistent, although you don’t have to post the same content everywhere. Basically, you must make sure the content on your blog has the same feel as the content on all your social media platforms, whether it is Instagram, Facebook or YouTube.

Consistency is key

When starting your blog, set up a consistent schedule of at least one post a week.

It can be difficult especially in the beginning when you’re not making any income from your blog and are working or studying full time. However, committing to at least one post a week will get you further.

Lifestyle blogging ‘do’s’

Try different things, you’ll be surprised that you might enjoy blogging about travel even though you started out blogging about makeup!

Always be open to learning new skills and improving your skills which will eventually improve your blog.

Read lots of other blogs for inspiration. Of course, you have to be original and don’t steal ideas but there’s immense value in keeping up with the trends in the industry.

Lifestyle blogging ‘don’ts’

Don’t do it for the “perks” and by that we mean the free stuff, paid brand campaigns.

If you start a blog because you expect to get loads of free stuff and money you’ll be disappointed. Lifestyle blogging takes so much dedication and hard work to even get noticed by brands at first.

This means that you have to genuinely enjoy creating content for it to be worth the amount of work it requires from you.

Don’t wait for perfection – if you’re waiting for the perfect time to launch your blog or the perfect blog post inspiration to hit, you’ll be waiting for a very long time. There is never a perfect time … so start that blog now!
