The lockdown has been a source of stress and hardship for many South Africans. However, SA citizens and corporates have once more stepped up to contribute what they can to help those who are most vulnerable at the moment.

The lockdown has seen so many South Africans contributing to help mitigate the effects of the lockdown by way of donating their money and time to help provide food and essential supplies to those in need.

One of the industries that have been hit harder than most has been the tourism sector with restaurants, hotels and resorts mainly unable to operate.

Despite this, Legacy Hotels and Resorts is undertaking to do what they can to feed communities during the pandemic and beyond.

Legacy Hotels and Resorts partnered with Nutriwell – Innovative Nutrition Solutions to feed the communities neighbouring its hotels and resorts. This initiative is part of an ambitious goal to feed 10 million children in the coming two years.

To date, Nutriwell has already fed over 1 million children with its range of fortified powdered products, including thick vegetable soup, soya stew mince, instant porridge and an instant beverage shake.

Legacy Resorts and Nutriwell contribute 7 500 individual, nutritionally balanced meals per day through its Legacy Pride NPC. Legacy is aiming to increase this to 15 000 meals per day for the next three months.

A call to action

In addition to their contribution, Legacy is calling on anyone else who wishes to contribute to do so via their website. Robert Hodson, Group Marketing Manager for Legacy Hotels and Resorts, said:

“Legacy has over 20 properties across the continent, and involvement and upliftment is a big part of our ethos”.

The project has provided 16 000 meals to Friends for Life in Alexandra, 48 000 meals to each of the North West’s Mogwase and Ledig communities and a further 48 000 meals to households in Belfast in Mpumalanga.

Both SizaBantswana Orphans in Hazyview and Baphemele Children’s Home in Cape Town have also received 15 000 and 27 000 meals respectively.

Addressing ‘significant inequalities’ in South Africa

Hodson explained that the pandemic has “further highlighted the significant inequalities that exist” in South Africa, and said that we need to help each other in the fight against poverty, “now more than ever”. He adds:

“By partnering with an organisation like Nutriwell, we can continue our work with local community upliftment, while also investing in the health and wellbeing of our greatest resource – our children”.
