Erns Grundling is back with the third instalment of his Elders series. In the first season of Elders, Grundling did the Camino de Santiago in Spain. For the second season, he went to Japan.

It’s most definitely worth a watch. In fact, Elders won a SAFTA award as the best lifestyle programme. Here’s what you need to know about Elders: Pelgrimstog van Hoop.

For the third season, he is keeping it local and will travel from his home in Cape Town to Agulhas; from Cape Winelands and Overberg. Grundling says the biggest challenge was “keeping healthy”.

“We had to shoot the series in three weeks, travelling more than 300 km, doing everything in our power to not get sick. The pre-production was done during level 4 and we were unsure about so many aspects of the production – from the guests to where we were going to stay”.

Grundling adds that “everything fell into place” and that the camera crew could start filming on 1 June 2020. He said they “realised very quickly that people out there were hungry for visitors”.

‘Elders: Japan’

The Pelgrimstog van Hoop (Pilgrimage of Hope) was developed by the theologist Frederick Marais and numerous churches, missionary stations and monuments to celebrate freedom is on the route.

Grundling explained that he met Frederick and Adrienne Bester of Communitas in Stellenbosch a couple of years ago:

“The Pilgrimage of Hope was Frederick’s idea after he walked the Camino in 2012. He at first planned the route to go from Robertson to Aghulas, but it now from Stellenbosch to Agulhas”.

What to expect from ‘Pelgrimstog van Hoop’

Grundling keeps it interesting by inviting guests to his show; season three of Elders will see Dana Snyman, Kabous Meiring, Dave Pepler, Hemelbesem, Duane Vermeulen and Lynelle Kenned join in the fun.

This is Grundling learned early on during his other pilgrimages in Spain and Japan that he would “meet up with other walkers”. It was a given that the same format would be used for the Pelgrimstog van Hoop.

“With the new series, we knew that I would be the only pilgrim because of the lockdown and we, therefore, decided to invite guests to walk certain parts with me”.

Travel local, see South Africa

Erns believes that South Africa can become a pilgrimage destination, especially “in times like these” where international travel is still off the cards. If you’re looking for local, affordable adventures, Elders season 3 has it all.

“I was blown away by the Pilgrimage of Hope. The natural beauty is as impressive as the Camino in Spain and the history involved makes it an even more remarkable experience. Add the wine farms on route where you can relax and you have a winner”.

Grundling hopes that Elders will “inspire viewers to support local tourism and pilgrimages and we will see many more people wearing red hats walking all the way from Stellenbosch to Agulhas, the most southern point in Africa”.

Elders: Pelgrimstog van Hoop will be in Afrikaans with English subtitles. The 13-episode third season starts on 30 September at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144).
