On 1 September 2020, the kykNET channels will welcome fliekNET (DStv Channel 149) as a permanent offering on Premium and the fifth channel in the kykNET stable.

The announcement was made during a DStv showcase event, hosted by DStv on 19 August.

During the showcase, it was said that originally fliekNET was a popular holiday pop-up channel showcasing locally-produced blockbuster movies, classic favourites and a variety of Afrikaans film formats. The permanent Premium channel will feature films from the second-oldest film industry in the world in various formats such as feature films, short films, story films, made-for-TV movies and documentaries. The channel will also feature new straight-to-kykNET films produced by South African filmmakers as part of the channel’s continuous investment in the local film and television industry.

Keeping audiences tuned in

kykNET has been keeping audiences tuned in on Tuesdays with the drama offering that included kykNET’s first Sci-fi thriller, Die Spreeus, family drama Alles Malan, and the popular law drama Fynskrif. In the upcoming months, kykNET will also produce a series of shorter dramas and move away from the 13-episode format for scripted content.

The first drama, Kompleks, will see award-winning actress Tinarie van Wyk Loots take a seat in the director’s chair. Kompleks was written by Louis Pretorius and Albert Snyman (Die Boekklub, Fynskirf) and is a coming-of-age story set in a parallel universe. The two stories will be narrated by Koos Kombuis and Deon Meiring, while starring Armand Aucamp, Gretha Petersen, Stian Bam, Ivan Botha, Roeline Daneel, Milan Murray, Paul du Toit, Theresa Bam and introducing Arthur Falko and Melissa Myburg to kykNET audiences.

In 2018, kykNET launched Arendsvlei – the first telenovela on kykNET&kie (DStv Channel 145). Fan pages and online discussion groups have been keeping social platforms abuzz from Mondays to Wednesdays, plotting the demise of the ultimate female villain, Wendy. Arendsvlei fans will be delighted to hear that the nail-biting cliff hangers will be around for another year and a fourth season which will arrive in October 2020.

It’s said that the reality team at kykNET also consistently develop new formats that echo international trends. It was during lockdown level five, when their customers were homebound, that the team decided to put two families in Kwarantyn for 50 days, while we watched along in isolation. Another original format is the talent show Maak my Famous. The show, now in its second season, is currently showing on both kykNET and kykNET&kie on Saturday evenings.

Part of its DNA

The investment in local talent and creating platforms for development is part of kykNET’s DNA.

In 2010, the first kykNET Silwerskerm festival was hosted in Prince Albert with one feature film on the program. Ten years later, the festival has supported the production of over 250 films through financial investment and development of new talent through the short film competition. Due to the current health pandemic, the festival will no longer take place at the end of August 2020. The current situation provided an opportunity for this year in bringing international experts into the conversation with our local role-players. The webinar will take place from 2-4 September and include international speakers from SXSW, Berlinale, The Sydney Film Festival, The British Film Council and Fremantle Media, Australia.
