With the easing of lockdown restrictions Stellenberg High School, in Bellville, lightened the mood of their 2020 matric class with its announcement to go ahead with the school’s annual matric ball.

However, along with excitement positively blooming in the air, came the challenge of finding the perfect matric ball attire. And cycling athlete Jonathan Bouwer, 18, was in need of some intervention to solve his dilemma.

Enter David Scott, aka The Kiffness, who came to Bouwer’s rescue on social media, offering his iconic custom-tailored floral suit for the occasion.

The South African spoke to Bouwer for all the inside details on how Scott’s random act of kindness changed his matric ball experience.

Known for his parodies and satirical commentary on South African socio-economic and political issues, The Kiffness also boasts great success in the South African music industry, racking up a total of three South African Music Awards (Sama) nominations.

Aside from his music, Scott is also the owner of a floral suit which was custom tailored by a certain Thái Tố Hồng from Vietnam.

Fans first laid eyes on the suit back in March 2017 when Scott took to social media to share the floral suit which was designed by him and his wife, Jüte Scott.

Since then, we have seen our fair share of the suit on social media over the years – from The Kiffness strutting around on stage at Huawei K-day to attending the Plett Polo Festival.

But this time round, the floral suit served a bigger purpose.

Reaching out to The Kiffness

After searching high and low for a floral-themed suit in Cape Town, Bouwer decided to take the social media route to try and find his dream suit.

“I was scrolling through Instagram when I came across The Kiffness’ page and I instantly knew that that was the type of eccentric floral theme I was looking for.

“I knew that I had nothing to lose by sending him a message — the worst that could happen was that he wouldn’t respond or just say ‘no’,” Bouwer said.

However, Bouwer said he went “mental” when he received The Kiffness’ unexpected, swift response.

‘We exchanged numbers and he told me I could drop by his house whenever it would suit me. I decided to go the very next day to see whether the suit would fit,” an elated Bouwer said.

When dropping by the artist’s home to fit the suit, Bouwer found Scott and his wife to be welcoming, humble and kind.

“I was super excited to see him in person and when we met, there was a real solid connection.”

A memorable matric ball experience

For Bouwer, 23 October at the Colour Lab Rooftop in Salt River was a night to remember, thanks to the help of Scott.

“I’m really thankful that I got to experience this despite what has happened in the past year. Everyone absolutely loved the suit and I got compliments from people the whole evening.”

In turn, Scott took to Facebook on 25 October to share three images in celebration: From the message that started it all, to the images of him with Bouwer and one of Bouwer with his matric ball partner, Liz Olivier.

And South Africans could not wait to reshare the inspiring story online. The post has received more than 1200, 19000 likes and 992 comments.
