This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5.

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently broke down the show’s epic penultimate episode in the latest “Inside the Episode” feature for the episode titled ‘The Bells’.

In the penultimate episode, Game of Thrones fans saw Daenerys finally snap and burn King’s Landing to the ground, where she’s turning into what seems to be ‘The Mad Queen’.

“In most ‘large’ stories like this, it seems like there’s a tendency to focus on the heroic figures and not pay much attention to the people who may be suffering the repercussions of the decisions made by those heroic people,” says showrunner, Weiss about Daenerys’ decision to burn King’s Landing to the ground.

“We really wanted to keep our perspective and our sympathies out on the ground at this moment because those are the people who are really paying the price for the decisions that she [Daenerys] is making.”

It looks like Jon Snow is also in denial with regard to what is happening with Daenerys. As the Unsullied take over King’s Landing on the ground together with Jon, the good guys start behaving like the bad guys.

“The moral lines that Jon’s drawn for himself in his own life can’t be maintained for everyone in all situations.”

As for the end, we see the final moments of the episode through Arya’s eyes. As Weiss puts it, we needed a perspective on “the hell Dany has built.”

And as for Jaime and Cersei Lannister, Winter is Coming reports that back some seasons ago, Jaime and Bronn had a conversation about how they would want to go, and Jaime’s one desire was to die in the arms of the woman he loves.

They go out of this world together and at the end of the day, Cersei is the only thing that ever mattered to Jaime.
