This was totally blown out of proportion but yes, the watermelon emoji reignited the beef between Kiernan Forbes, otherwise known affectionately as AKA, and Refiloe “Cassper Nyovest” Phoolo.

Mzansi Twitter was ablaze on Tuesday evening, after Hip-Hop mogul and Ciroc empresario, Sean “P Diddy” Combs, posted a tweet of himself dancing with the watermelon emoji as the caption.

Why was AKA squabbling with Cassper Nyovest?

This had absolutely nothing to do with AKA or Cassper but the Twitter streets baited the two rappers to go at each other about a fruit emoji — literally.

Since AKA has a longstanding relationship with Cruz Vodka, he has been allowed creative input in the brand’s expansion and what he brought to the table was the Cruz Watermelon flavour.

Since then, the brand’s been catapulted into one of South Africa’s highest-selling spirits.

Ciroc, being the competitor, may have jumped onto the bandwagon with an upcoming flavour of the same fruit.

At least, that was the speculation when Diddy, who heads up marketing on a “50-50 split on profits” deal with Diageo (Ciroc’s manufacturers), posted that tweet.

The watermelon effect

It could have ended with the above explanation — a cutthroat business trend that defines marketing — but AKA and Cassper had to take it to the next level.

Diddy posting the emoji somehow meant victory for Forbes because we know him as the watermelon vodka guy.

While AKA was lamenting in his victory lap, Cassper, on the other hand, got baited into being defensive about his presumed boss’ shift towards a trend.

Two minutes into dissecting this and the squabble between these two sets of Twitter fingers still doesn’t make a lick of sense so here’s the narrative, told by Diddy, AKA and Cassper’s tweets.
