If you love those sweet yeasty rolls of cinnamon, sugar and cream cheese, you must try this recipe. It is the closest you will get to the real thing, cinnabuns that is.

Just as with the store-bought cinnamon buns, you also can add nuts, chocolate, caramel or other flavourings.

Though they are a little more time consuming to create, one thing to note is that they really don’t require that many ingredients and you may have all the ingredients at home already. These also happen to look and taste just as good as from the store, and at a fraction of the price. Just be careful that you don’t over-indulge on these heavenly delights.

We’ve found that cinnabuns make for an excellent dessert or treat and are always a winner no matter what the occasion.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour

  • 1 egg, room temperature

  • 1 teaspoon yeast

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 cup butter

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • Sauce ~ to spread on the dough
  • 1 cup cream cheese

  • 2 tablespoons honey or sugar

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • Syrup:
  • 1/4 cup butter

  • 2 tablespoons sugar or honey

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 4 tablespoons cream cheese

Method

  • Heat the milk for 20 seconds in the microwave to lukewarm, then add butter and the honey. Whisk by hand until frothy
  • Add the egg to the milk and mix well then add the yeast and salt.
  • Sift the flour, stir in the above milk mixture with a spoon until it is all in. Then set the spoon and start making the dough by hand. The idea is to form a ball.
  • Place dough on a flat surface to rest and cover with glass bowl for 30 min (WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW)
  • Start to roll the dough to a 25cm to 35cm rectangle.
  • Mix the cream cheese, honey and cinnamon together with a fork until smooth and spread onto dough.
  • Roll up evenly and cut into even pieces. You can use thread to cut the dough to give a clean line.

  • Spray a baking pan or tray with baking spray. Place rolls evenly on the tray. Leave space for the rolls to expand, cover with plastic wrap or film and leave for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 180°C. Bake the buns for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let them rest while you prepare the sauce.
  • Melt the butter, honey and cinnamon in a saucepan on medium heat. When this starts to simmer, leave it to caramelise for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and, once cooled a little, add 3 tablespoons cream cheese.
    Pour over the buns.

  • You can add sugar and nuts to the filling.
  •  When buns are baked, spread cream cheese syrup on top. Leave this to sink in for 5 min.
