The official nominees list for the 2021 Golden Globes was released virtually on 3 February. Netflix titles took centre stage amid a few surprising snubs such as Bridgerton and Da 5 Bloods.
This was the first time the nominations were announced virtually. US actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson announced the nominees via livestream from what appeared to be their homes. They did not have teleprompters but read the nominations off old-school printouts.

NETFLIX DOMINATES GOLDEN GLOBES
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cinemas across the world were closed for a significant period in 2020. This opened the door for streaming from home and so Netflix was able to dominate the Golden Globes nominees list. Netflix bagged a total of 42 nominations, with 22 in film and 20 in television.
David Fincher’s Mank led the film nominees with six nods and The Crown led the television nominees, also with six nods. Schitt’s Creek followed closely with five.
Ozark landed four nominations and The Queen’s Gambit two. Much to everyone’s surprise, Emily in Paris also received two nominations.
Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 bagged five nominations.
Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman were nominated for best actress and best actor respectively for their performances in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
BIGGEST SNUBS OF THE GOLDEN GLOBES
This is one of the biggest snubs as Netflix recently said Bridgerton was their biggest series ever. It had 82 million views after just a month of streaming and yet the series was not nominated for a single Golden Globe.
‘DA 5 BLOODS’
Directed by Spike Lee, Da 5 Bloods was expected to pick up a few nominations. However, the film did not receive any acting, director, screenplay or drama nominations. Awkwardly, Lee’s children Satchel and Jackson were chosen to serve as Golden Globe ambassadors for the 2021 awards ceremony.
Meryl Streep is the most celebrated person in Golden Globe history, with a total of 32 nominations. But she did not receive any nominations this time, snubbing her for her roles in Prom and Let Them All Talk.
The Emmy winner was snubbed for her role in Netflix’s Malcolm and Marie, directed by Sam Levinson, who also directed Euphoria. She is yet to be nominated for any Golden Globe.

JONATHAN MAJORS AND JURNEE SMOLLETT
Lovecraft Country may have received a nomination for Best Drama Series, but both Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett were snubbed in the acting categories.
