Earlier this year, The South African reported on five-year-old Shanaya Govender who was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma.

After a brave two-year battle, little Shanaya, also known as ‘Shanaya the First’ passed away yesterday morning, surrounded by her family and friends.

After the public involvement in raising funds for the five-year-old and after the overwhelming amount of support and love her family felt, the Govender family posted this message on social media yesterday:

“Our world has turned the brightest pink. Our princess has turned into a star to shine bright on us forever. She did it her way in true Shanaya the First style.

Shanaya passed away now at 7:56am. She wanted her favourite dress, her wig, her tiara, her high heels and make up. She made us call everyone she is close to then stopped breathing and her heart stopped. She did it her way. No pain no suffering. We ask for everyone to please give us some space at this time.”

Going forward

For the last 13 months, the public has supported Shanaya and her family through a crowdfunding campaign launched on donations based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy.

Since April 2018, over R 131 384.62 was raised towards Shanaya’s treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma with contributions from 196 donors.

There is now a BackaBuddy campaign set up to help celebrate Shanaya’s life. There is also a Facebook page that has been set up to acknowledge the bravery and life of this special little girl.
