Pan-fried club steak – Under R100.00
On special at Pick ‘ Pay is bulk club steak for only R79.90 per kilo. Add some potatoes to shopping your trolley this week and treat your family pan fried club steak. It goes great with baked or roast potatoes, and the recipe is real easy.
You will need club steak, paprika, salt, pepper, flour, butter, parsley, basil and vegetable oil. Simply season the steaks with paprika, salt and pepper. Dust both sides with flour.
Heat up the butter and oil in a skillet or pan and brown the meat over medium heat. About three minutes per side should be enough, or depending on your cooking preference. Then, combine the sauce ingredients and pour over the steaks. Voila!

Don’t forget the charcoal. It sells for R43.99. All you need now is braai broodjies, salads and corn on the cob! Spar is covering all the bases; mielies are on special, four for R15.99. Oh, and pork rashers are on a sale too, R79.99 per kilo.
If you’re going with the pork chops, try this delectable sticky sweet and sour recipe. It goes down well with potato salad.
Recipe: Sticky sweet and Sour pour chops
- 6 x 250g pork chops (or equivalent thereof)
- 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 2 tsp chopped rosemary
- 3 tsp honey
- 3 tsp soya sauce
- 2 tsp chutney
- Whisk the liquid ingredients together with a fork.
- Put the chops into a large, sealable bag, and pour the marinade on top, reserving about a 1/4 cup for basting. Squish ’em around so that everything’s coated, and then rest the bag in a big bowl in the fridge for at least an hour, turning occasionally to make sure that everyone’s had their turn in the marinade. (It’s really, really better to do this overnight, to let the flavours truly saturate the meat.)
- When you’ve got medium hot coals (or a heated grill) place your chops on the heat, and make sure to baste them frequently as you braai them until cooked through and slightly caramelised.
