Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle recently dazed royal fans everywhere on Remembrance Day.

What is Remembrance Day?

Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. It is usually observed in November every year.

In South Africa Remembrance Day is not officially observed, but some suggest that ‘South Africans have every reason to observe Remembrance Day‘ as SA reportedly made ‘significant contributions to the Allied causes in both world wars and in the Korean War‘.

This year, Meghan and Prince Harry paid tribute to the nation’s war dead, while Kate and Prince William met those affected by the Grenfell tragedy.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined hundreds of veterans and their families at the 91st Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, to honour and remember those who lost their lives in service of their country.

They each planted a Cross of Remembrance, paying respect to those who have served in our Armed Forces.

On Instagram, the sussex’s revealed that they also spent time meeting with veterans and family members from all areas of the Armed forces – from those who have served in past campaigns to more recent conflicts.

This is the seventh time Prince Harry has attended the Field of Remembrance – having previously accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip for several years.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the other hand attended the launch of the National Emergencies Trust – an independent charity which will provide an emergency response to disasters in the United Kingkom.

The trust will work collaboratively with charities and other bodies to direct public donations to their appeals, and to distribute funds fairly and efficiently at the time of a national emergency.

Speaking at the launch, Prince William said:

“Just now and on previous occasions, it has been humbling to speak to survivors of the London Bridge and Manchester attacks, the Cumbria floods, the Grenfell Tower fire and other disasters here in the UK. Their stories are as heart-breaking as they are inspiring. Their resilience and strength are deeply humbling.

“I am very pleased that the National Emergencies Trust now stands ready to provide a structured, organised response to help people right across the UK in the event of a domestic disaster.”
