Voting for Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap to become South Africa’s first official Lego set, is now open!

The idea comes after Lego fan, Wayne Nestadt entered his recreation of the area in the Lego Ideas competition. To this date there is no Lego set that reflects the beauty, heritage and diversity of South Africa.

According to Times Live, Nestadt said he chose Bo-Kaap because it was one of the country’s most photographed places and has a rich history and diversity.

“Bo-Kaap represents the South African rainbow nation and with Lego sold all around the world, people of all ages will know the place.”

He also said winning the competition would mean global recognition for both South Africa and the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood.

“Winning would be amazing and it’s not about the money. It would be great for SA, as it would be represented on a global level.”

The set he has created features the houses at 71 Wale Street and the people who live in the area.

How ‘Lego Ideas’ work:

The first thing is to come up with an awesome idea – like visualising the Bo-Kaap site as a Lego set. According to Lego, product ideas take a long time to develop, and you’ll have to promote your project where only the very best will win the hearts – and votes – of Lego fans, but the incredible prize of seeing your creation become a real Lego set reportedly makes all that effort worthwhile.

Other ideas:

Other Lego product ideas include the Cherry Tree Lane from the 1964 film, Mary Poppins. The idea already boosts over 3000 supporters whereas SA’s Bo-Kaap only has 300 votes so far.

Another popular idea among fans include the ‘historically accurate Rome’ piece which indulges the idea that Rome was in fact not built in one day.
