BET Networks has announced that it will be producing a Lebo Mathosa biopic and talented South Africans have been invited to audition for the role.
As reported by Bona Mag, the international network wants to retell The Lebo Mathosa Story.
Lebo Mathosa: The life of a South African icon
The iconic singer whose solo career bloomed soon after she parted ways with her group, Boom Shaka, passed away on 23 October 2006.
Years after her passing, her music has lived on and her DNA has forever been imprinted on the generations of South African female musicians we have seen in the last decade or so.
Mathosa’s life was filled with the controversy of the modern pop star.
The entertainment industry lauded her for her edgy style: the short blonde bob haircut and on-stage antics.
She was also one of the first female South African urban artists to explore
Her openness about her sexuality — being bisexual — at a time when South Africa was exorcising its patriarchal beliefs, was another thing that gave Lebo that X-factor.
Nobody will ever forget the moment former president Nelson Mandela condemned Lebo and her fellow Boom Shaka mate, Thembi Seate, for exposing that much sexuality.
The singer, unfortunately, died in a car crash at the age of 29, after her driver lost control of the vehicle in Johannesburg.
Where will Lebo Mathosa auditions be held?
Now, the time has come for a South African actress to fill up those shoes and resurrect Lebo one last time for a biopic that will delve deeper into the icon’s life.
The network will be holding auditions for the role of the icon on Sunday, 31 March at the Sky Rink Studios in Johannesburg.
