The Royal Family announced on social media that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided on a name. Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are pleased to announce they have named their first born child: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.”

Leading up to the announcement, fans had been rushing to the bookies with their best guesses. According to leading bookmaker Coral, Arthur was in the lead with 5-1 odds.

Followed by Philip with 6-1, Albert and James with 8-1, while Alexander and Alfred weren’t all that popular with 10-1 odds.

Dukedoms

Dukedoms can only be inherited by male heirs. Prince Harry was given the official title His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

In addition, Meghan Markle became Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. Furthermore, the title of “Duchess” can’t be inherited by their daughters; it can only be received by marriage.

Another fun fact: The last Duke of Sussex was Prince Augustus Frederik, King George’s ninth child, who lived from 1773 to 1843.

Will royal baby Archie be a prince?

Despite being seventh in line to the throne, Meghan and Harry’s baby doesn’t automatically become a prince. Unlike Prince William and Duchess Catherine’s children.

However, young baby Sussex may still be a lord, with the surname Mountbatten-Windsor. The tradition goes back to a Letters Patent passed by King George V in 1917. He decreed:

“…the grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and also enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.”

Even though King George limited the use of titles in 1917, the Queen could still overrule his decree. She’s done that in the past when Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis was born.

The change does not automatically affect Prince Harry’s children since he is not the eldest son of Prince Charles. His and Meghan’s kids will still have lady or lord titles, according to the original Letters Patent.

So, there is still a chance that Archie could be known as His Royal Highness of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland if the Queen steps in. We will just have to wait and see how it all pans out.
