Game of Thrones is everywhere you look at the moment – billboards, magazines, social media, streaming television and even the cinema. Now it’s time to get some Game of Thrones goodness in the last place that matters, in your belly.
We’re halfway through the week, and it’s almost time for the second episode. It seems that the war is coming to Winterfell quicker than they thought. That leaves us with enough time to practice some of the dishes before Game of Thrones season 8 episode 2 on Monday.

Throughout the show and probably more so the books food plays a significant role throughout the story. Whether it’s the decadent tables of King’s landing or the warm comfort of a campfire meal a lot of the intrigue and storytelling happens with a handful of grub.
So we’ve collected some of our favourite dishes from the Game of Thrones universe for those of you with a bit of skill in the kitchen and who are finding the long nights between episodes dark and full of terror.

These tiny delicacies are a favourite of Sansa Stark, and it’s hard to think of anyone in the show who more deserves the comfort of home-baked cakes. This recipe for a light lemon cupcake and lemon-cream cheese frosting perfectly blends Sansa’s beauty and northern strength.

Hot Pie’s Brown Butter Crust Pie
Ah Hot Pie. I for one am very glad that he made it alive, all the way to Game of Thrones season 8. Well, he was still alive at the end of season 7 so we live in hope that he is one of the few characters who gets to make it to the end.
Hot Pie once told Arya that his secret is browning the butter, something most people don’t have time for. That doesn’t sound so hard.
Whole roast chicken
Now if there’s one person in the Game of Thrones universe who loves him some pie, it’s Sandor Clegane, aka The Hound. Eight seasons later and I really hope someone gave him those chickens.
This doesn’t look too hard, does it? Serve with potato wedges and vegetables, and some good ol’ mulled wine. Speaking of mulled wine…
Mulled wine is spicy and rich but also medium bodied and easy to drink. The sweetness of the honey and sugar combines brilliantly with spice of the fresh ginger in this recipe.
“The Old Bear was particular about his hot spiced wine. So much cinnamon and so much nutmeg and so much honey, not a drop more. Raisins and nuts and dried berries, but no lemon, that was the rankest sort of southern heresy…”
A Clash of Kings
The infamous Frey pie is a moment that many Game of Thrones fans may prefer to forget, but it served to remind us of a fundamental lesson, don’t mess with Arya Stark. Ever.
We beg you not to try the Frey pie recipe from the show. The Frey pie had pieces of Black Walder in it, so there’s that… However, a short rib and ale pie is just what the doctor ordered for the cold April and May we have ahead.
‘Purple wedding’ pie
Ding dong, that evil blonde-haired king is dead. If you’re still celebrating that time Joffery turned every shade of purple and shuffled off his mortal coil, you’re not alone.
My only regret is that the producers didn’t find a way to resurrect the slimy psychopath as a white walker so we could watch him get killed again. So as a special treat try this pie recipe and put that scene of Joffery clutching at his throat and turning Barney purple on repeat.
For this recipe is delicious as it is you should probably forget about the episode. Seriously, for Theon’s sake just go forth and try this yummy Bratwurst recipe and leave poor Theon out of it he’s suffered enough.
Bowl o’ Brown
Nothing quite like a beef and barley stew on a cold winter night. This recipe looks delicious, and that’s more than some characters on Game of Thrones can say.
Beef and barley stew, also referred to as bowls of brown, is served primarily in Fleabottom, the poorest district in King’s Landing. In Flewbottom, the meager, slow-cooked stew contains meat of questionable origins…
Melisandre: “When I was your age, I lived on one bowl of stew a day, and ‘stew’ is a kind word for it.
“Gendry: “In Flea Bottom we called them ‘bowls of brown’. We’d pretend that the meat in them was chicken. We knew it wasn’t chicken.”
Oysters, Clams and cockles
For this recipe, we’ll try for a taste of Braavos. The Braavosi seafood and wine are unrivalled but be warned steer clear of any waifs when doing your oyster shopping, no good can come of it.
This ‘dish has no name,’ or you can just call it Oysters with Prosecco and Mignonette. This recipe will be well worth your time though if you happen to survive your trip down to your local oyster seller. Need more inspiration?
