It’s official – OR Tambo International Airport is getting a massive upgrade, as developers plough R4.5 billion into the long-term project. The first phase will officially break ground by the end of February, with this part of the revamp expected to be completed by 2020.

The Western Precinct will be the first wing of the airport to get a hi-tech face-lift. Not only will the daring new build host company offices and retail space, but the development also aims to introduce more pedestrian-friendly connections and stops for the Gautrain service at OR Tambo.

What can we expect from OR Tambo’s new development?

Within the next year-to-18-months, the 8.5-hectare precinct will be upgraded to include the following:

  • Hotel rooms
  • Conference centres
  • Retail outlets
  • Living accommodation
  • Office space
  • Eventually, there will be more space for “transit-related” services

On Tuesday evening, the airport officially shared the first two photos of what the planned redevelopments would look like, based on an artist’s impression:

OR Tambo executive claims “tens of thousands of jobs” will be created

Bongiwe Pityi-Vokwana is the general manager of OR Tambo International Airport. She was joyously optimistic about what this development will bring to the local area. In fact, the official predicted that the entire redevelopment – which would eventually encompass another passenger terminal – has the potential to create 38 000 jobs:

“As one of the busiest airport in Africa and the international gateway to South Africa, it is imperative that OR Tambo retains world-class infrastructure. The Western Precinct development forms part of a strategy to expand our offering and to drive new sources of growth for the entire region.”

“These developments will accommodate growing passenger demand and expand the midfield cargo facilities at the airport to accommodate up to two million tons of air cargo annually. The iconic airport development precinct will be a catalyst in transforming the Airport hub into an Aerocity.”
